Midwest Excitement

In the land of settled couples and established careers lives a dream called Adventure. It visits people in their sleep and calms any restless tendency to get up and get out, to change the life they've made for themselves. But sometimes, every once in a while, Adventure calls to you.

H and I are headed out to a little old place called Kansas City. Missouri, that is. H worked long hours every spare minute he wasn't at his nine-to-fiver and accomplished something not many people do - a shot at his dream job. I am beyond proud of him, and I can't wait for him to impress everyone at his new gig.

That means we are selling our abode in Texas and hitting the road. Caravan style, to be precise. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Right now I'm sitting in the airport reminiscing over the whirlwind weekend we had looking at prospective houses. After sifting through hundreds of online photos, discussing what we both wanted in our new home, we narrowed it down to about 30 houses. Thirty doesn't seem like that many until you have to get in the backseat of a realtor's car and hunt them all down in under three days. I asked our lady what the record was for houses she's shown in a single day, and she said fifteen. Obviously I had a goal for the weekend.

I won't go into every single house, but I will give you a quick recap of Kansas City housing characteristics.

A. Every single house has a driveway in front. Not even an option for alleyways in back. I love this.

B. Where are the fences? Generally, people everywhere bit Texas are kind and trustworthy and even mow each other's lawns. True story.

C. HVAC's and sump pumps. I simultaneously want to know and do not want to know what a sump pump is. First thought is it has something to do with sewage.

I am now an expert on interpreting floorplans and what the seller really means when they say the basement is an unfinished walkout. And not to brag, but I've gotten pretty good at knowing what the seller is hiding based on what their photos look like. I'm like a house hunter super sleuth.

That's all for now. I'm about to board my flight back to Big D. I will say that if all goes well, I might be moving into a house as soon as the end of the month!
